By Jennifer Wolf

School and art supplies under $100
Computers under $1,500
Be a Smart Shopper During Tennessee's Tax Free Weekend:

If you use good common sense, you'll be able to save even more more during tax free week.

For example, shop around at different stores - in person and online - and use coupons if you can to maximize the amount of your discount.

In addition, don't buy items that you don't really need just because of the tax free weekend event. Since the regular sales tax rate in Tennessee is 7%, that's the amount of money you'd be saving, in addition to the local sales tax, if applicable. Instead of waiting for tax free weekend, you might be able to save even more money by comparing prices and using coupons, either before or after the tax free weekend takes place.

Keep in mind, too, that the sales tax holiday only applies to specific items. For example, belts are tax-free, but belt buckles are still taxed during Tennessee's tax free weekend. In addition, most sporting goods are not tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday, including cleats, football pads, and protective helmets, so make sure that you read Tennesse's Sales Tax Holiday web page before counting your savings.
